Chicago’s Comic: Eman Khallouf

Q: What inspired you to start stand-up comedy?

A: It was by coincidence. Everyone around me thought I was funny. But I always thought it was like when people sing in the shower and think they’re good. Then my brother pushed me to do it so I could have some kind of hobby. I went to writing classes just for the fun of it and that was it, I was in love and found my calling.

Q: Describe your first performance.

A: It was horrible. I did it in Dubai in a shisha place. Friends attended and wanted to be seated in the smoking area, not the stage area. They didn’t think I’d be good, they were just there to be nice, and I bullied them into going. I was shy at the beginning. My voice was shaking but then the first laugh came and that was it! I felt so proud that I didn’t shit myself on stage and haven’t stop performing since.

Q: Do you have “pre-show” rituals? If so, what are they?

A: I always have Shisha, coffee and a good book to read. On the drive there I always play happy music and that’s it.

Q: Where in the world is your favorite place to perform stand-up? Why is this your favorite place?

A: I haven’t performed outside the UAE yet but I’d love to perform back home in Amman. In Dubai there’s a small café that was the first place to welcome me and my comedian friends. It’s my favorite place. It’s called Qiso and we have many jokes about the name.

Q: What shows, podcasts, blogs do you produce or co-produce?

A: Still in the making, nothing launched yet. Stay tuned.

Q: What are three of your favorite things?

A: My brother, my cat and popcorn.

Q: What’s one thing people assume about you, that is or isn’t true?

A: I have the worst first impression when meeting new people. They always assume I’m a snob but in reality, I’m easy going. I just don’t give a fuck most of the time.

Q: If you weren’t a comic, what other job would you love to do?

A: Belly dancer.

Q: What are some comedy goals/dreams you have on your To Do List?

A: Produce a comedy show. Act in a comedy movie/show.

Q: What quality, trait and/or body part do you really like about yourself?

A: I’m sarcastic, I can find a solution for everything and I have amazing legs.

Q: What’s one thing you wish more people knew about you? [or anything else you’d like mentioned, i.e. your education, personal life or mission statement]

A: One of my goals is to lead by example, empower younger women to be able to speak up and not be framed in other people expectations.

Q: How will you know you “Made It?”

A: I don’t think you ever really know you made it. There’s always more to give and do. I don’t want to think I made it so I won’t get lazy. I want to always work hard and learn more.
