Meet Chicago’s own comedian to watch—Paul Farahvar.

Q: What inspired you to start stand-up comedy?

A: Before I did stand up, I was helping my friend Chris Bader get started with stand up and when he got to open for Bob Saget, I went back stage with him to act as his “manager”. I was telling Bob Saget a story and Bob asked “Are you going to do that bit on stage tonight?”, thinking I was Chris. When I told him I was not, he asked if I wanted to do a quick set. Knowing that the first time you do comedy should not be to a sold out theater, I declined but since I was always thinking about doing comedy, I did an open mic the next day and have been chasing that rush ever since!

Q: Describe your first performance?

A: Before I did comedy, I was a musician so my first “performance” was years before on stage in Champaign in college. On the first song when I had to sing for the first time in front of people, my body went numb and I thought I got electrocuted from the mic!It was just the adrenaline. I loved it. My first stand up performance was an open mic at 3 Dead Moose. Like an idiot, I invited all my friends and in my head, “I murdered” but I know now that it was a “stacked” audience.

Q: Do you have “pre-show” rituals? If so, what are they?

A: I try not to eat before and try to drink a sugar free red bull to get some energy or something with caffeine. For longer sets, I also try to write out my set and for all sets, I like to watch the crowd and the comic before me to see what they are laughing at.

Q: Where in the world is your favorite place to perform stand up? Why is this your favorite place?

A: so many places! I love Laugh Factory Chicago (my home club) and in Hollywood and Zanies Old Town and Rosemont! Those are places where I just feel comfortable. I also love Comedy Club on State in Madison and love performing in Scottsdale Arizona.

Q: What shows, podcasts, blogs do you produce or co-produce?

A: I produce the weekly show “Drink Date Laugh” at Laugh Factory every Friday at 8 pm, “Everyone’s a Lawyer” at Laugh Factory the last Sunday of every month at 7 pm and my podcasts “Singles Only” and “2 Guys, 1 Album”

Q: What are three of your favorite things?

A: Portillo’s, Donuts, and Conan O’Brien

Q: What is your favorite sammich?

A: Is a Cheeseburger a sandwich? Portillo’s Cheeseburger. If not, Egg McMuffin

Q: What’s one thing people assume about you, that is or isn’t true?

A: Wow, so much. I have heard so many things about me that I would rather not repeat here. I think its mostly assumptions about me or rumors as to how I get to where I am today. LOL

Q: If you weren’t a comic, what other job would you love to do?

A: A musician. I was one and loved it. I miss it sometimes.

Q: What are some comedy goals/dreams you have on your To Do List?

A: I would like to do stand up on Conan and have my own talk show of some sort on TV.

Q: What quality, trait &/or body part do you really like about yourself?

A: I think I am a hard worker. I may not be as funny as other comedians but I don’t think anyone will work as hard as I will during a week to further my craft and goals. I like that I am positive. I see the silver lining in everything (or try to). I also like that I stay away from gossip. I hate that about the comedy scene sometimes.

Q: What’s one thing you wish more people knew about you? [or anything else you’d like mentioned, i.e. your education, personal life or mission statement]

A: Man, I am an open book about my personal life, which sometimes becomes a problem. As for a mission, I like to help people who work hard and are kind to people. I love Chicago and would love to see us get the props for comedy we deserve.

Q: How will you know you “Made It?”

A: Man. What a great question. I think if I start headlining clubs nationally and have some more tv credits, I will “make it” but honestly, knowing myself, I am never gonna be satiated.
