Chicago’s Comic: Sammy Obeid
Q: What inspired you to start stand-up comedy?
A: My friends told me I was funny. But I didn’t believe them. Then a college professor told me I should try stand-up, and I thought, well he’s a professional, so I should try it.
Q: Describe your first performance.
A: I wore all black and leather gloves and did a weird character. I made it weird for everyone.
Q: Do you have “pre-show” rituals? If so, what are they?
A: Trying to politely avoid conversations with people who can’t see that I’m clearly working on my set list.
Q: Where in the world is your favorite place to perform stand-up? Why is this your favorite place?
A: A show called “Tourettes Without Regrets” at the Oakland Metro. They seem to get me. They’re smart, rowdy, loud laughers, and good listeners all at the same time.
Q: What shows, podcasts, blogs do you produce or co-produce?
A: My blog: www.sammyko.com. I have a podcast coming soon.
Q: What are three of your favorite things?
A: Weed, math, and massages (legal).
Q: What is your favorite sammich?
A: Sunflower butter and date syrup… started making them recently, they are amazing.
Q: What’s one thing people assume about you, that is or isn’t true?
A: People assume that I’m smart by the way I look and talk. They are right. But also they are wrong, I can be a huge idiot.
Q: What are some comedy goals/dreams you have on your To Do List?
A: Have my own show on TV! Have a well received stand-up special. Produce some unique international comedy tours in the Middle East and Russia. Be the first comedian to perform in North Korea.
Q: What quality, trait and/or body part do you really like about yourself?
A: I have great abs.
Q: What’s one thing you wish more people knew about you? [or anything else you’d like mentioned, i.e. your education, personal life or mission statement]
A: I have great abs.
Q: How will you know you “Made It?”
A: I already have! It took a while to realize it, but I’m living a great life. But if I ever get to the point where I’m selling out theaters in most places I go, I think that will suffice.
